Location: Emporium Mall
Duration: 10 Mins

Rabeea Qamar’s performance was concerned with contrasting experiences and contexts of urban life and space. Location was central to her piece - it took place outside Emporium Mall, a huge shopping centre surrounded by tents, huts, and makeshift houses in shambles, occupied by the very workers that built it. She slipped a paper bag over her head, put a piece of bread in her mouth, and violently took apart a rose in her hands. The audience was barely able to stay out in the heat, and the harsh sunlight made it difficult to watch. Qamar was also concerned with the visual nature of her performance, with the dust and dirt of her surroundings contrasting with her metropolitan backdrop.
