Location: Walled City
Duration: 40 Mins

Risham Syed’s performance was inspired by her relation to her appearance as a means for self-expression and identity. She took on the garb of a barber in the Walled City and offered to cut men’s hair for free. By immersing herself in the mannerisms and practices of a men’s barber, she was able to engage with customers as though she were a regular figure in their lives; trimming their beards, styling their hair, and exchanging jokes and anecdotes. This performance was not only about appearances and actions as markers of one’s role amongst people, but was also about the artist’s own experience of belonging and interacting with a space.
